Shopping + dressing this way has changed my life. I’m not exaggerating.

Not my closet, but I sure wish it was!

I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of a capsule wardrobe. A year and a half ago, I joined a capsule wardrobe program called Outfit Formulas. I’ve spent the last 18 months trying to build a wardrobe that works for me. Not replacing the entire thing each season, but adding pieces to it with intentional purchasing. This Holiday Capsule is one I created for myself. 9 items of clothing (including outerwear) to make 9 outfits. You could keep mixing and matching to make even more, but I wanted to give you the idea. Trends this season include the color red, which happens to be perfect for the holiday season, chelsea boots, and faux leather bottoms…pants, leggings, skirts.

1. Buy basics. You’ll get the most use out of these pieces.

2. Mix and Match. This little holiday capsule reminds me of Garanimals, the kids clothing brand from the 80’s. (This capsule would have the same animal tags, all of the pieces go together nicely.)

3. Adding a trendy color in an accessory is a great way to incorporate it for less.

4. You don’t need to spend a fortune. Look on Amazon or at your thrift shop. (Amazon is a great place to get colored crossbody purses for less.)

5. Invest in coats and shoes that will last you several seasons. I tend to always buy coats in neutral colors to get the most wear out of them: black, white, camel or a denim jacket.

   The cool thing about a capsule is you can use this as a template. Meaning, if you don’t like a short skirt, sub in a longer skirt. Don’t like skirts at all, sub in a pair of printed pants. Don’t like the faux leather pants? Sub in black jeans or leggings. Need more indoor layers? Add in a camel sweater blazer. Need your legs covered? Add in black tights or hose.
