I’ll celebrate with you when you get to 27, Kathi! In the meantime — and more so! — please enjoy stretching your writing muscles and admiring others who are doing the same.

On any given day the Notes are about split between people giddy/cross about their “numbers” and people speaking up for their own work or admiring someone else’s. (The corners get filled up with pet pics.) “The numbers” is a Shiny Object that all of us bat around now and then, but it’s not the Real Thing. The Real Thing is what you came here for in the first place. Welcome!

Kathi, welcome to Substack! I’m new here too and have the same feelings about followers. I have decided that this is something I want to do to work my writing muscles, and while I do hope my work is read, I am mostly here to practice something I love. Your title caught my eye & I am looking forward to your insight on aging with grace & grit! Thank you for your work!

Hi Kathi, nice to meet you here! I’m also new to Substack (hope you’ll visit me at Moments - nature photos + stories of moments of connection); I’m also feeling that Substack is a breath of fresh air after social media; and I’m a 45yo mom looking forward to your thoughts on Aging with Grace and Grit! :)

I have been thinking maybe write. Then maybe not. Ambivalence is my writing name! I think maybe because of a reluctance to wade into the noisy fray and start begging people for their attention. Do I even have anything THAT important to say? Why should people follow me? What’s my angle? What is the point? But. Maybe? Argh!

Barbara, I'm glad you found your way here. I'd say don't get too caught up in the details of trying to gain subscribers or even having an angle. If you love writing, then do it for the love of writing. The way I look at is if it's for 1 person or 100 people or 1,000 people this is something I love and it brings me joy. Let me know if you start writing. :)

Hello Kathi. I am very new to substack as well. I don't have any followers, but it's ok. I feel great just being able to write out my message on a platform in hopes that someone will be able to read what I have to say, and most of them being complete strangers that I don't have to explain my logic to. I hope that somebody will find my writing intriguing and want to eventually subscribe. As for your post, I did enjoy it. Best wishes.

Just reading this felt like a breath of fresh air. Thank you! Love this attitude and insight, and it looks like so many others do, too. Congratulations! I'm feeling the same way about being swallowed under the popular writers and at the same time loving this rekindled joy that's coming from writing on Substack and connecting with that part of myself again. That's priceless.
